365 STORIES FROM TANZANIA

by Josephat Hema from Tanzania Are you ready? Yes, it is 365! It has been a very long time ever since I wrote a thing for the blog (which is my home) and so I have come up with these stories to cover up. So without further ado, let me dive in with you; “Stay with your Uncle for a while” A minibus (a common means of public transport) commonly called Daladala in Tanzania makes a stop. I was

My first week of work

by Georges from DR Congo I work in a school called „Kreuz-Grundschule“, a large school working in Kreuzstraße 145, Dortmund 44173. I supervise the children, I keep them busy right after class, waiting for their parents to come and pick them up. The last week of April was my first week in my work placement, as of Monday, 04.23.2021.

About the travel and my first days in Dortmund

by Georges from DR Kongo We are very happy to be in Europe, precisely in Germany. We arrived in Germany on 23 March 2021. It was a Wednesday. We say glory to God for his protection. My very first foot on German soil – and all things were new to me. At Düsseldorf International Airport we were warmly welcomed by Carolin Daubertshäuser, Frauke Linke and Dirk Loose, who brought us to the Volunteershaus in Dortmund. In that same first day Carolin taught us some notions about the use of household goods including the toilet, shower and especially the modern kitchen which requires a lot of attention. Our rooms are very nice and cleaned. My first observation is that I discovered that time is the most respected thing in Germany, and this following their four

Hopefully coming soon: Adelia Putri

Hi everyone, here I am writing something again after a long time on this blog and I am happy about it. I am Adelia Putri and I am 21 years old. I’m from Borneo in Indonesia. I will write about my 1 year experience while I was waiting to come to Dortmund. So, for 1 year I survived with this condition (Covid-16 Condition). I took care of myself, while doing my final project to finishing my Bachelor degree. Last year, I have to complete my

Coming soon: Espérance Mirindi

Hi everyone, I’m so glad to write again something on this blog. I’m Mirindi Espérance, I’m 25 years old and I’m from the East of DR Congo in Africa. Last year I made a video to introduce myself as a new UEM’s volunteer expected to work in a homeless center in Dortmund and I was so excited because at the time I was making that video I was in my country’s capital city, in Kinshasa for my visa application. It was in April 2020 last year that I should have travelled. I couldn’t wait to meet new people from everywhere, share experiences with them, have good time together, learn new things and be challenged to work as a volunteer. All seemed settled but God had different plans. Corona virus was there and stopped everything,

The house could move, but the heart stays

by Dika from Indonesia Volunteer House could move everywhere, but Meylantstraße 77 always be my best Volunteershouse I ever lived. The house became my „safe place“ when I lived in Germany. When I travelled around Europe, I felt safe because I know I have a place to come back. Europe itself is a strange place for me, but the Volunteershouse in Meylantstraße could give me a sense of „Home.“ Volunteershouse is not only about the physical building but also about the people who lived inside, about the neighborhood around. Such a beautiful memory we had in there, living in the same roof for a year, sharing happy and sad stories, cooking and eating, cleaning the house, make it dirty again, and many more.

Goodbye, my home

by Gentille from Dortmund / Germany (and the Democratic Republic of the Congo) About the one and only address in my history. Coming from Africa, from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, more precisely from Kivu in the Rutshuru Territory. My house of welcome, the Volunteers House, had given me every opportunity. Even when I was in other cities or neighboring countries, my only address was Meylantstrasse 77. I still remember that first day very well, in March 2018, when I was greeted by the big family (Pastor Ulrich, Claudia, Carolin, Christina, Dirk, Frauke, Yassin and his mother Marion and many more …) and I even got a little present from a very nice little boy named Yassin that I keep carefully to this day. It was unique and great to know who my
