by Mavis from Zambia

My name is Mavis. I am 22 years old, and I come from Zambia. I am currently in Dortmund doing my voluntary work in the Berghofen parish, where I support and collaborate closely with people with disabilities at Haus am Lohbach. I genuinely enjoy this work, as it teaches me valuable lessons about patience, kindnes and unconditional love. Every day is meaningful, and I continue to learn so much from the people around me while growing both personally and professionally.

When I first arrived in Germany, my initial impression was very positive. The volunteershouse where I live with other volunteers, as well as the people around me, made me feel comfortable right away. Everyone is kind and welcoming, especially the people I work with, who received me warmly and helped me feel at home. I am particularly grateful to Rev. Sabina, who has shown me great kindness, support, and understanding. I truly appreciate her guidance and encouragement.

I would also like to express my sincere thanks to the Ecumenical Department in Dortmund, which has been incredibly kind to us, and especially to me. I truly have no reason to complain, as they have supported me in so many ways.

Of course, there are also some challenges. The weather in Germany is very different from what I am used to in Zambia, which can make adjusting a bit difficult at times. I also find the language challenging. German is not easy, but I am motivated to keep learning and improving every day.

Even though I am happy and feel truly blessed to be here, there are moments when I feel a bit down because I miss my family very much—especially my mother. As the youngest in my family, I have always been deeply loved and cared for. Being far away from them is not always easy, but I carry their love with me wherever I go, which gives me strength.

Taking part in this volunteer program and coming to Germany means a lot to me. I feel proud of what I have accomplished, thankful to God, and truly appreciative of everyone who has supported and encouraged me along the way.

With summer coming soon, I am excited to finally enjoy the sun and continue this journey with even more energy and joy.

Thank you for taking the time to read me ❤️
