My Practicum in a landscape architecture firm

by Louis from Indonesia The last two months (January and February) have been very busy months for me. As my volunteer service is coming to end, I try to use every time productively. At the end of January I used the rest of my vacation to do an internship at an architectural landscape firm in Bad Oeynhausen, Nagel Landschaftarchitektur & Ingineur. My internship was organized by a close friends of mine. His name is Christian Hohmann and his wife Joy Dela Cruz, during my internship I lived alone in his apartment. The apartment with my internship is approximately 1.6 km away. I always walk, because I like to walk and plus the city of Bad Oeynhausen is very beautiful and neat. I did my internship for a week. Even it was only for a

The exposition “Das zerbrechliche Paradies” in Oberhausen

by Louis from Indonesia On Christmas 2021, Adelia, Georges, Espérance and I were very happy to receive a Christmas gift from Frauke, Carolin and Dirk. It was a trip to Oberhausen, which included visiting the exhibition “Das zerbrechliche Paradies”. The exhibition is in Gasometer, Oberhausen. The Gasometer building is a former industrial building which has now been converted into an exhibition venue. It is a temporary exhibition, it started from the summer last year until December 2022. The exhibition shows the beauty of nature and the influence of man/human on the environment by the photographs and videos. On the first level, there are a lot of beautiful pictures. It shows the perfect side of the earth, from the nature, flora and fauna. There are some pictures from the natural catastrophe, but only a few.

Volunteers. Family. That we are.

by Marc from Argeninia How far we are from our homes! How difficult to learn a new language! How difficult to be immersed in a culture totally different from ours! Will I be able to adjust to life in Germany without my family present?! On Wednesday, 23 February 2022, I arrived in Germany without knowing what was waiting for me: another family. Adelia, Esperance, George and Louis are my family. Today, after being here for three weeks, I have the difficult task of saying goodbye to them. My heart aches deeply because in this short time I found a great support from and with them. I arrived knowing nothing and I leave them knowing many things.

International Sunday Service in Lydia Congregation

by Adelia from Indonesia Last month, on 13 February 2022,  I  have organized an international service. I wasn’t alone, Louis, Esperance and Berly helped me. In different services I have attended before, I realized a problem: even it was an international service, we only used songs from the „Evangelisches Gesangsbuch“. I was wondering, what it really was meant with the word „International Sunday Service“? I have thought, an International Sunday Service must be of different language (songs, prayers, blessings, and so on), and learning about different cultures and songs.

Love and live your city

by Espérance from DR Congo Due to the current pandemic situation, the women’s meal in the Petrikirche in February 2022 had to be postponed. Espérance Mirindi was invited to speak and had already finished her text on „Love your City“. We will publish her contribution here: Leon de Saint Moulin said : “ The history of an environment like all people is enriched as it is paid attention and studied. We can´t love a city whose realities we have not experienced, whose foundation we don´t know and whose aspirations we don´t know“.

Christmas 2021 in Germany

by Georges from DR Congo Speaking of Christmas, I noticed a big difference during the celebration here in Germany. Here in the Congo, the Christmas party is often seen as a celebration reserved for small children only. We buy them new clothes, we really try to make the children very happy that day, sometimes we celebrate with other families, but the majority of Congolese people say that Christmas is for children. The adults are waiting for the big New Year’s Eve party. It’s different in Germany, where the population prefers to celebrate Christmas over New Year’s Eve. I saw it here in Dortmund. I can assure you that we celebrated Advent and Christmas here from November to December.
