Dieser Text ist der Refrain eines Liedes mit dem Titel „In der Weihnachtsbäckerei. Das war das erste deutsche Lied, das mir wirklich gefallen hat. Es hat mich überrascht, als ich es im VONOVIA Ruhrstadion in Bochum gehört habe. Nach der Tradition des Kuchenbackens beim WG-Abend war ich auf so eine einmalige Überraschung nicht vorbereitet.
Ich hätte nie gedacht, dass man in einem Fußballstadion Weihnachtslieder singen kann. Obwohl ich viele Leute ankommen sah, waren die Plätze immer leer. Es war erstaunlich, wie das Stadion so viele Menschen fassen konnte.
Zusammen mit den anderen Freiwilligen, Isaac, Median, Nisha und Phaskal, hatten wir bei unserer ersten Erfahrung eine tolle Zeit. Was für eine fantastische Erfahrung Carolin, Frauke und Dirk für uns gemacht haben. Wir sind wirklich dankbar für unseren Freiwilligeneinsatz in Dortmund.

Zwischen Indonesien und Deutschland gibt es zweifelsohne erhebliche Unterschiede im Bildungswesen. Als ich nach Deutschland zog, um als Süd-Nord-Freiwillige in einem Kindergarten zu arbeiten, war ich wirklich überrascht, wie groß der Unterschied ist.

Weihnachten in Sri Lanka und Deutschland

Ich kann gar nicht glauben, dass unser Freiwilligenjahr schon acht Monate vorbei ist und wir schon Dezember haben. Es ist das allererste Mal, dass ich Weihnachten ohne meine Familie feiere.
Ich sehe viele Unterschiede in vielen Bereichen, wie wir Weihnachten in SL und in Deutschland feiern. Den größten Unterschied sehe ich bei den Speisen und Getränken. Zum Beispiel werden die meisten Weihnachtsmärkte in Sri Lanka um katholische Kirchen herum aufgebaut, und die meisten Lebensmittel, die auf diesen Märkten verkauft werden, sind Süßigkeiten. Bei uns gibt es Aluwa (eine Süßigkeit, die zum singhalesischen und tamilischen Neujahrsfest zubereitet wird), Weihnachtskuchen, Boondi usw. Auf den Weihnachtsmärkten in Deutschland sehe ich eine Vielzahl von Lebensmitteln wie Currywurst, Reibekuchen, mit Schokolade überzogene Fruchtspieße, Baumstriezel, Brezeln usw. Wir haben auch festgestellt, dass Glühwein und Kinderpunsch zu dieser Jahreszeit in Deutschland sehr beliebt sind. (mehr …)

Ich danke Gott für alle Segnungen in diesem Jahr meines Freiwilligendienstes.
Zunächst einmal schreibe ich diese Zeilen mit gemischten Gefühlen: traurig, dass ich Dortmund verlasse, und aufgeregt, zurück in mein Heimatland zu gehen. Die Zeit ist so schnell vergangen, von dem Moment an, in dem ich mich beworben habe, bis zu dem Moment, in dem ich diesen Abschiedsbrief als Freiwillige im Kirchenkreis Dortmund schreibe, und ich frage mich, wie dieses eine Jahr verlaufen ist. Es war eine großartige, aufregende und emotionale Erfahrung, die ich in Dortmund machen durfte.
Dieses eine tolle Jahr hat mich persönlich wachsen lassen und ich bin froh, dass ich einen sehr guten Aufenthalt, ein schönes Haus, nette Mitbewohner*innen und natürlich tolle Menschen in Dortmund hatte.
Bleibt dran, denn ein Jahr, in dem ich so viel gelernt und erlebt habe, muss noch geschrieben werden, also werde ich mehr darüber schreiben, was mir dieses Jahr der Freiwilligenarbeit gegeben hat und wie ich mich dabei gefühlt habe.
Liebe Freiwillige (Isaac, Phaskal, Median, Nisha und Roselva), Carolin, Frauke, Dirk, Jana und einige ehemalige Freiwillige – Vielen Dank für die Liebe, Anleitung, Motivation und für alles, was ihr für mich getan habt. 🙏🏼

Historische Relikte sind immer eine interessante Sache zu besuchen oder zu sehen.
Hier werde ich euch meine Geschichte erzählen, auch die Geschichte eines Ortes hier in Dortmund.
Also, ich bin Phaskal und ich arbeite beim Referat Ökumene Dortmund und hier erzähle ich euch, was mir gelungen ist. Vor ein paar Wochen waren ich und meine Kollegen im Phoenix West.
Die Geschichte des Hüttenstandortes PHOENIX reicht bis in die Mitte des 19ten Jahrhunderts zurück. Bereits 1841 wurde die Hermannshütte von dem Iserlohner Hermann Dietrich Piepenstock auf dem Gelände des zukünftigen PHOENIX Sees gegründet. Etwa zehn Jahre später entstand auf PHOENIX West das Hochofenwerk.
1843 wurde auf der Hermannshütte die Produktion von Stahl aufgenommen. Der bis dahin ländlich geprägte Raum um den Stadtkern von Hörde entwickelte sich in den folgenden Jahrzehnten zu einem Industriestandort, der schnell für seine Stahlprodukte mit hoher Qualität bekannt wurde. Ab 1852 begann der Bau der Hochofenanlage, so dass ab diesem Zeitpunkt auf PHOENIX West auch Roheisen hergestellt werden konnte, das vorher aus Belgien importiert wurde. Schon 1864 ging der sechste Hochofen in Betrieb.
Nach dem Bau des damals modernsten Oxygen-Stahlwerks des Kontinents (1963) übernahm die Hoesch AG 1966 die Hüttenunion auf PHOENIX. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt arbeiteten ca. 10.000 Menschen auf dem Areal. 1997 existierte durch die Übernahme der HOESCH AG durch den Krupp-Konzern (1992) sowie die Fusion von Thyssen und Krupp zur ThyssenKrupp AG nur noch ein Stahlkonzern im Ruhrgebiet. Hiermit war das Ende der Stahlproduktion in Dortmund eingeläutet. Die ThyssenKrupp AG entschied sich zwischen den beiden Stahlstandorten Duisburg und Dortmund für Duisburg am Rhein. 1998 wurden die Hochöfen (PHOENIX West) und 2001 die Hermannshütte stillgelegt.
Mit dem Projekt PHOENIX knüpft der traditionsreiche Standort nun wieder an seine erfolgreiche Vergangenheit an. ( http://www.phoenixdortmund.de/de/fakten/historie.html )
Dieses Viertel, das sich in einem völligen Wandel befindet, beherbergt heute moderne Traditionsbrauereien, avantgardistische Kunstgalerien und ruhige Parks, die das Viertel wieder zum Leben erweckt haben. Die Hochöfen sowie der Hoesch-Gasometer zeugen von dieser glorreichen Epoche der Dortmunder Industriegeschichte.
Die Phoenixhalle, die in „Phoenix des Lumières“ umbenannt wurde, ist ein Industriegebäude, das renoviert und in einen Ort für immersive digitale Ausstellungen verwandelt wurde.
Ich war mit meinem Büroteam dort, um den Skywalk zu machen.
skywalk ist ein Tourprogramm auf Phoenix West, das die Geschichte von Phoenix West erzählt. Während des Programms laufen die Leute auf einem großen Rohr 40 Meter über dem Boden, um die noch erhaltenen Gebäude der Industrie zu sehen. Die Tour wird von einem Führer geleitet, der uns die Geschichte von Phoenix West erzählt hat.
Während dieser Tour können wir auch die schöne Aussicht auf Dortmund genießen und das macht mich sehr glücklich.
Die ganze Zeit über war ich sehr glücklich und stolz auf mich. Zu Ihrer Information: Ich bin ein Mensch, der Angst davor hat, sich an einem hohen Ort aufzuhalten.

This text is the chorus of a song called „In der Weihnachtsbäckerei“ (In the Christmas bakery). This was the first German song that I really liked. It surprised me when I heard it at the VONOVIA Ruhrstadion in Bochum. After the tradition of baking cakes at the flat-sharing evening, I wasn’t prepared for such a unique surprise.
I never thought it would be possible to sing Christmas carols in a football stadium. Although I saw a lot of people arriving, the seats were always empty. It was amazing how the stadium could hold so many people.
Together with the other volunteers, Isaac, Median, Nisha and Phaskal, we had a great time on our first experience. What a fantastic experience Carolin, Frauke and Dirk made for us. We are really grateful for our volunteer placement in Dortmund.

Educational system for children in kindergarten: Differences and similarities between Germany and Indonesia

There is undoubtedly a significant difference in education between Indonesia and Germany. Additionally, there seem to be some notable distinctions between the educational systems in Asia and Europe. It really surprised me to see the significant difference when I moved to Germany to work as a South-North Volunteer in a kindergarden.

Christmas in Sri Lanka and in Germany

I can’t believe that 8 months are over from our volunteer year and that it’s already December. This is the very first time I’m celebrating Christmas without my family.
I see many differences in many areas of the way we celebrate Christmas in SL and in Deutschland. Food and drinks are the main difference I see. For example, most of the Christmas markets will be constructed around Catholic churches in Sri Lanka and most of the food items sold in these markets will be sweets. We have Aluwa (a sweet prepared in the Sinhala and Tamil new year), Christmas cake, Boondi etc and in Christmas markets in Germany I see a variety of food items like Currywurst, Reibekuchen, Chocolate covered fruit skewers, Baumstriezel, Pretzel etc. We also realized that Glühwein and Kinderpunsch are very popular during this time of year in Germany. Thanking God for all his blessings throughout this year of my volunteering.
To begin with, I am writing this with mixed emotions, sad that I’m leaving Dortmund and excited to go back to my home country. The time has gone so fast right from writing about introducing myself until now as I’m writing a goodbye note as a volunteer in Kirchenkreis Dortmund and I’m wondering how this one year has gone It was such an excellent, exciting, emotional experience that got to have in Dortmund.
This one amazing year has made me grow personally amd Im happy that I had very good stay, beautiful house, lovely housemates and of course amazing people in Dortmund.
Stay tuned because one year of so much learnings, experiences, are yet to be written, so I will be writing more about what this one of volunteering gave me and how it made me feel.

Historical relics are always an interesting thing to visit or see.
Here I will tell you my story, also the story of a place here in Dortmund.
So, I’m Phaskal and I work at the Dortmund Ecumenical Department and here I’ll tell you what I managed to do. A few weeks ago, me and my colleagues were at Phoenix West.
The history of the PHOENIX smelter site goes back to the middle of the 19th century. As early as 1841, Hermannshütte was founded by Hermann Dietrich Piepenstock from Iserlohn on the site of the future PHOENIX lake. About ten years later, the blast furnace works were built on PHOENIX West.
Steel production began at the Hermannshütte in 1843. Over the following decades, the previously rural area around the town centre of Hörde developed into an industrial location that quickly became known for its high-quality steel products. Construction of the blast furnace plant began in 1852, meaning that pig iron, which had previously been imported from Belgium, could also be produced at PHOENIX West from this point onwards. The sixth blast furnace went into operation as early as 1864.
Following the construction of the most modern oxygen steelworks on the continent at the time (1963), Hoesch AG took over the steelworks union on PHOENIX in 1966. At that time, around 10,000 people worked on the site. In 1997, following the takeover of HOESCH AG by the Krupp Group (1992) and the merger of Thyssen and Krupp to form ThyssenKrupp AG, there was only one steel group left in the Ruhr region. This signalled the end of steel production in Dortmund. ThyssenKrupp AG decided between the two steel locations Duisburg and Dortmund in favour of Duisburg on the Rhine. The blast furnaces (PHOENIX West) were shut down in 1998 and Hermannshütte in 2001.

This neighbourhood, which is undergoing a complete transformation, is now home to modern traditional breweries, avant-garde art galleries and tranquil parks that have brought the district back to life. The blast furnaces and the Hoesch gasometer bear witness to this glorious era in Dortmund’s industrial history.
The Phoenixhalle, renamed „Phoenix des Lumières“, is an industrial building that has been renovated and transformed into a venue for immersive digital exhibitions.
I was there with my office team to do the skywalk.
skywalk is a tour programme on Phoenix West that tells the story of Phoenix West. During the programme, people walk on a large tube 40 metres above the ground to see the surviving buildings of the industry. The tour is led by a guide who tells us about the history of Phoenix West.
During this tour we can also enjoy the beautiful view of Dortmund and that makes me very happy.
The whole time I was very happy and proud of myself. For your information, I am a person who is afraid of being in a high place.
